PRESQUE ISLE — A neighbor is being credited for rescuing a resident of a Delmont Street home, when fire was spotted Thursday afternoon on the back porch of the home.

“On April 18 around 3:37 p.m. the Presque Isle Fire Department was dispatched to a structure fire at 5 Delmont Street in Presque Isle. Upon arrival, we had flames showing on the porch at the back of the dwelling. We did a fast attack and had a quick knock-down of the fire,” said Deputy Fire Chief Adam Rider, of the Presque Isle Fire Department.
According to Rider, fire had spread to the kitchen area as well by the time firefighters arrived.
“There was one occupant home at the time. A neighbor woke up the occupant and got him out safely,” said Rider. The occupant’s name was not available at presstime but the structure is owned by Terry Gilmer. No injuries were reported.
Rider said the fire was contained to the back of the building and credited the neighbor’s quick action in preventing the situation from getting worse.
“There didn’t seem to be working smoke alarms at the residence. The Presque Isle Fire Department would like to remind everyone to have working smoke alarms in your homes,” said Rider.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
The PIFD received assistance from the Easton and Caribou fire departments. A total of 21 firefighters were on scene for approximately an hour. Crown Ambulance also stood by to assist. Officer Brian McQuarrie, of the Presque Isle Police Department, provided traffic control.
