CARIBOU — Caribou FFA hosted the 83rd annual Caribou FFA Awards Banquet on March 21 where the many accomplishments of the local chapter were highlighted. In attendance were 179 friends of agriculture, family members, and FFA supporters.
The banquet was dedicated to the memory of Matthew Turnbull, former Caribou and State FFA officer, who passed away November 2012.
Shane Theriault, PJ Saunders and PJ Belanger from Theriault Lawn Care were presented the Blue & Gold Award for their assistance with the chapter for the past several years in the Merry Mulch Christmas Tree Collection Project. Over the past few years hundreds of trees were collected with their help.
Sixteen Greenhand and eleven Chapter awards were given. From these the following outstanding chapter awards were made: Star Greenhand, Maurice Tardy; Chapter Star Farmer, Allie Dusza; Agricultural Placement Award, Dylan Greenier; and Chapter Star in Agribusiness, Sabrina Haney.
Eleven Supervised Agricultural Experience Program or Project Awards were given to the members who filled out a proficiency application. Each student recorded their time and skills acquired while working on their project and filled a proficiency application in one of 49 award categories as well as keeping a photographic file of their project.
Four students earned their Gearing up for Safety recognition for completing the Ag Tractor Safety Course and 22 hours of classroom instruction and operation.
Several Caribou FFA members, the Caribou Tech Center Welding instructor Keith Dumond, and former agriculture teacher master fabricator Richard McNeal teamed up with the mechanical engineering students at UMO to build a Formula SAE Car. This vehicle will compete at Michigan International Speedway in May against 120 top engineering schools from around the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Recognized for their outstanding help with the Caribou FFA Chapter and acknowledged as the 2013 Caribou FFA Honorary Members were Tracy Corbin, Keith Dumond, Dave Rochester and Lance Belanger.
