Bernard speaks to PROBUS
Twelve members of PROBUS met at Reed Commons on the Northern Maine Community College campus April 17. The guest speaker was Sue Bernard, dean of development and college relations, who was introduced by presiding chair Mel Fitzherbert.
Bernard spoke to the group about how courses offered at college are developed with input from advisory groups in the community. She said 90 percent of the graduating students find employment or continue their education. New courses being offered are Community Paramedicine Training and Health Information Technology.
She explained that with over $5 million dollars in donations, ground has been broken for a $7 million wellness center. The goal of the center will be to have well and well-educated students. It will offer fitness equipment with a knowledgeable fitness staff, very affordable weight reduction programs and education in healthier food choices. Much needed space for use by commuter students will be created. There will be space for an air museum in the gym and enhanced parking will be created.
Following a time for questions, the group expressed their thanks to Bernard.
After a coffee break, Fitzherbert called the business meeting to order. Secretary’s reports for February and March were read and accepted. The treasurer reported a balance of $480.61. It was voted to offer a $500 scholarship to a high school graduate who will be attending NMCC. Applications will go out this week and should be returned first week in May.
Helen McConnell mentioned a very interesting timeline mural at MMG. Pearl Carmichael gave a humorous reading.
