Island Falls News

Mary Lou Pomeroy and daughter, Jane Foster, arrived in Island Falls recently and while here visited with Jane and myself and also had a visit with Patti Hartin, a long-time friend. Before returning to their home in Caribou they all had lunch at Porter’s restaurant and admired the new look given recently to the restaurant.

On April 20, the monthly dinner given by the Island Falls VFW Post 7529 was held and was deemed a great success. The menu turned out to be not only roast beef and pork, but also baked turkey. All this was accompanied by a variety of vegetables, mashed potatoes, coffee and, of course, dessert and was enjoyed by many.
I have now been swimming again at the pool at Vacationland Estates and have been joined by friend, John White, a Smyrna resident. Many other people in the area enjoy swimming.
The last of the piled up snow on my lawn and in my back yard has finally disappeared and now the wild life is slowly showing up. I looked out the other evening about supper time and there was a flock of wild turkeys wandering across my back lawn and over towards Sam’s house. Hopefully they kept on going south.
I am still putting out birdseed for my feathered friends, but will stop when it gets warmer. Then the job of raking up the shells of the birdseed and cleaning up a few broken tree limbs from the cedar tree — broken when hit by the snowplow.
The cardinals are still around and now I have an occasional mourning dove and, just last week the juncos returned. I don’t believe the pesky squirrels will ever leave. Maybe when I stop putting out sunflower seeds they will decide to leave.
I still have the deer out back and early this a.m. there they were happily grazing. When it gets greener and warmer they will show up earlier. Have some old bread ready for them and a couple of apples left.
