Fourth of July plans taking shape

LIMESTONE, Maine — A town of traditions that include the longest-running Fourth of July parade in the state, Limestone’s known as the place to be when the fireworks fly.
But this year, folks may be able to watch those fireworks from the downtown area instead of the traditional Trafton Lake venue, several miles from the center of town.

As discussed during the Greater Limestone Chamber of Commerce’s Fourth of July planning meeting on April 15, the group is leaning hard toward moving the post-parade celebration downtown this year by utilizing the Albert Michaud Park as well as the new downtown Rotary Park.
“It’s been something we’ve been talking about for a couple for years, but it’s just been a lot of talk around the table,” said Chamber President Michelle Albert. “As the new elections [for the Chamber Board of Directors] went through in November, the discussion became more serious.”
With a few variables still up in the air regarding where the fireworks would be launched for the downtown celebration, Albert anticipates that board members will soon have the answers they need to reach a decision on the possible venue shift.
“We’re still going to have a week-long celebration with different activities happening throughout town,” Albert explained.
Customer Appreciation Days, the Strawberry Shortcake Festival, the Pet Show, picnics and silly games — all other traditional Fourth of July festivities will be held as usual regardless of the possible celebratory-venue shift.
“Our biggest change is on Fourth of July itself — instead of coming into town and then shifting everything to Trafton Lake, our goal is to keep everyone in town to showcase what our town has to offer,” she said. “The Chamber wants to showcase our Main Street and bring everybody together for a day to relax, spend time with their families and make memories.”
The next meeting of the Chamber will be held on Tuesday, April 30 at 6:30 at the town office.
