UMPI squads garner victories
The University of Maine at Presque Isle softball team reached the victory column for the first time this season with a doubleheader sweep of Southern Maine Community College April 5.
After going winless in games played in Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Virginia during the first part of the spring trip, the Owls took a doubleheader in impressive fashion by scores of 13-3 and 13-2.
In the game one victory, UMPI came out dialed in at the plate, scoring eight times in the top of the first inning. Jessica Campbell and Kellie Peers, the first two batters in the lineup, combined to go 5 for 5 with two walks and six runs scored.
Junior pitcher Krista Coffin earned her first win of the season with a complete game six-hitter. She walked two and struck out four during her outing.
In game two, the Owls’ big inning came in the second as they again put eight runs on the board. After two frames, UMPI was up 11-0 and was able to coast to the five-inning victory and sweep of the ’Wolves.
Ashley Laking was the offensive star for the Owls in the contest. In the best game of her young career, Laking went 2 for 2 with two doubles and a career-high three RBI. She reached base all three times she stepped to the plate.
As a team, the Owls put 20 runners on base on 13 hits and seven walks. UMPI stole four bases, including two by Taylor Cochran.
Megan Hannigan contributed three hits to the Owls’ effort, scoring once and driving in one. Game two pitcher Whitney Donovan took advantage of the run support to notch her first win of the season. Donovan went the distance, giving up three earned runs on seven hits, walking two and striking out two.
The Owls were swept the following afternoon by Pine Manor in a doubleheader played at Chestnut Hill, Mass. The scores were 6-5 and 10-1.
UMPI took one of three against Fisher College in a three-game set April 6 and 7 in Lynn, Mass. and this past Saturday, the team dropped two to New England College, 16-0 and 14-3. On Sunday, the Owls were swept by the University of Southern Maine, 17-1 and 6-1.
The Owls’ record is now 3-18.
Baseball team sweeps SMCC, splits doubleheader vs. Fisher
The University of Maine at Presque Isle baseball team swept its first doubleheader of the season on Sunday, winning a pair of games against Southern Maine Community College in South Portland, 6-3 and 20-4.
In the game one victory, Dylan Worster picked up his second pitching win of the season and Jordan Perry notched his first save.
Worster went six innings and allowed four hits and just one earned run.
Owl third baseman Daniel Lewis provided the power, hitting his first home run and collecting his first three RBI of the season.
UMPI was active on the basepaths, swiping a season-high five bases without getting caught. Shane Smith had two of the thefts.
The second game saw the Owls establish a season-high in runs scored. Carlos Villoria led the attack by reaching base six times, including four hits, and raised his batting average to .412. He scored four runs and drove in two.
Andrew Bartlett gained his first collegiate win on the mound by going the first four innings and surrendering just three runs on three hits.
On Monday, in a doubleheader against Fisher College, the Owls were able to earn a split and now own a record of 7-18 on the campaign.
UMPI won the first game, 3-2. All the runs of the game for both teams were scored in the second inning. The Owls tallied their three on Josiah Brazier’s bases-loaded single that scored Anthony Batchelder. Shane Smith then had a sacrifice bunt that plated Logan McLaughlin before Alex Csiernik came across on a wild pitch.
Jake Fillebrown allowed five hits and just the two runs in the complete-game victory.
The Owls dropped the second game by the same 3-2 score.
