CARIBOU — Caribou High School Principal Mark Jones announced that he has chosen Meredith Sleeper, a senior at CHS, to receive the 2013 Principal’s Award. The award, sponsored by the Maine Principals’ Association, is given in recognition of a high school senior’s academic achievement and citizenship.
“Meredith is an exceptional school citizen,” Jones praised. “I have known her since before her freshman year, and her performance has only continued to improve throughout the years.”
The daughter of David and Shannon Sleeper, Meredith has a long list of academic and civic activities she has participated in, including soccer, Nordic skiing, track, Student Council, National Honor Society, band, jazz band, chorus, show choir, homeroom representative and Junior Exhibition presenter. She has also been an altar server at her church since third grade, worked at her father’s store, danced and was a junior instructor with The Maine Dance Academy, participated in the fund-raising event Dancing Like a Star and was a Girls State participant, where she was voted in as a senator and was nominated for the Ms. Dirigo award for her hometown.
An honors luncheon was held at the Spectacular Event Center in Bangor on April 6, but Sleeper was unable to attend due to a prior commitment.
“I was sorry to miss the luncheon,” Sleeper said, “but I am honored that Mr. Jones chose me for the award.”
The Principal’s Award is presented in more than 100 Maine public and private high schools by member principals of the MPA, the professional association which represents Maine’s school administrators. Winners are presented with a plaque and five $1,000 scholarships are awarded in the name of Horace O. McGowan, and Richard W. Tyler, former Maine principals and executive directors of the association.
