A dry state of affairs — Governor Haines, in a recent statement, gave his reasons for “clean-up” of Maine’s liquor situation which has resulted in the removal of three county sheriffs and the resignation of a fourth. The Governor declared he does not intend to stop until every official within his reach is enforcing every liquor statute in the fullest letter and spirit of the law.
Of local interest — Sheriff Bryson’s liquor squad made an unsuccessful raid upon the so-called “Bee Hive” on Bangor Street, Sunday afternoon.

Philatelic celebration— Houlton Postmaster Mrs. Peabody has received announcement from Washington in regard to a new issue of six-cent air mail stamps commemorating Air Mail Week. The local Stamp Club is making plans for a special cachet to be used on all outgoing mail from the local post office during that week.
Photographs donated to Cary Library — Rev. David Lewis Yale of Meriden, Conn. announced a gift of 60 glass-covered stereopticon slide pictures to the Cary Public Library of Houlton. The photographs were taken during Rev. Yale’s pastorate in the Congregational Church here about 12 years ago. The pictures include scenes in the local Congregational Church and also of the Foxcroft Road church.

Iron manganese deposits in Smyrna — A survey field party will investigate indications of iron manganese deposits in the Oakfield Hills area near Smyrna Mills this summer, State Geologist Robert G. Doyle announced.

BS-FromFiles-dc-pt-16HODGDON HIGH ROYALTY — Elaine Stewart, a freshman at Hodgdon High, is crowned Queen, and Terry Little, a junior, is crowned King during the Winter Carnival dance Friday night at Hodgdon High School Gymnasium. Performing the coronation honors are Cheryl Putnam and George Lycette, king and queen of the 1962 carnival.
A community responds — Friends and family have wasted no time in coming to the aid of the Herschel Hoyt family of Monticello who were burned out of their home April 8. Just four days later, more than a dozen workmen arrived at the site of the Gentle Road home to start constructing a new home. The Willing Workers Society of Littleton met recently at the home of Mildred Prosser where a quilt was tacked for the Hoyt family.

Local bar and restaurant places fifth — Mums of Houlton placed fifth in the northern division of the Ms. UGLY (Understanding, Generous, Lovable and Youthful) contest by raising $1,378 in the bartending contest sponsored by Coors Brewing Company to support multiple sclerosis research.
Chester L. Briggs auxiliary elects officers — The Ladies Auxiliary of Chester L. Briggs Post 47 recently elected the following officers: Phyllis Bradley, president; Linda Foster, first vice-president; Judith Eastham, second vice-president; Linda Foster, secretary-treasurer; Maxine Morris, chaplain; Louise Kirner, sargeant-of-arms and Karla Ramsey, historian.
