The Maine National Honor Society adopted the Stop Hunger Now program as its main service project for 2012-2013.
The program packs dry meals consisting of rice, soy and dehydrated vegetables that are fortified with 21 essential nutrients, which are distributed to families in countries facing famine around the world.
The Caribou chapter contacted Mr. John Swanberg of Aroostook Savings and Loan, who graciously donated 43 blue banks in the shape of homes. Andrea and John Swanberg donated a quarter to start off each of the 43 banks.
Each NHS member was asked to save their change. Two collections were held, and the Caribou chapter donated $1,100, enough to pay for 4,400 meals. The entire state collected enough to pack just over 10,000 meals.
The NHS Members at the state convention held at the University of Maine at Orono on March 8, 2013 packaged the meals.
