PI duo gains honor

The Bangor Daily News announced its 37th All-Maine girls’ basketball team over the weekend, and two members of the Class B state champion Presque Isle Wildcats earned berths on the elite squad.

Senior guard Chandler Guerrette, who last year made the third team, was elevated to the first team after closing out a brilliant campaign. The co-player of the year in the Big East Conference, who was at or near the top in several statistical categories, closed out her career in style by scoring 33 points in her team’s 51-44 win over Lake Region in the state finals. Guerrette finished with 1,120 career points. She will play at Husson University in Bangor next year.
Megan Ireland was selected to the third team. The senior guard averaged 12.2 points per game and nailed 40 three-point field goals during the regular season and 12 more in the post-season. Ireland made the all-conference second team and is also heading to Husson University in the fall.
According to PI coach Jeff Hudson, Guerrette is the first Wildcat girls’ player since Katie DeLong in 2006 to be selected as a first-teamer. He added that Guerrette and Ireland are the first PI teammates honored in the same season during his 13-year tenure.
Players from the region receiving honorable mention were junior Carmen Bragg and sophomore Mackenzie Worcester from the Class D state champion Washburn Beavers.
