PRESQUE ISLE — It’s not just the birds that are tweeting this spring, city officials are now twittering away, following the creation of Twitter accounts for each municipal department.
City Manager Jim Bennett told city councilors during the April 1 meeting that accounts have been established for each department head, with the goal of posting updates of what’s going on locally.
“It’s official, we’ve gone live. All department heads now have a Twitter account. This will allow them to provide information to those interested in following them in the community,” said Bennett.
Twitter is a social networking and microblogging service that allows users to post short messages — no more than140 characters — called “tweets” to a group of followers.
Bennett said it is vital that the city have a presence on social media.
“Utilizing social media is a new cost-effective component to our online communications strategy,” Bennett said. “Embracing technology and social media applications, such as Twitter or Facebook, can be a great opportunity to make connections with our residents, while distributing helpful information to them in real-time.”
“It’s a smart and easy way to stay current with the latest information Presque Isle has to offer,” said Bennett.
