CARIBOU — Hilltop School students were provided with the opportunity to learn about “Positive Intervention” and the concept of “Passing It On” recently as the school engaged the children in activities to reward them for making wise choices and the opportunity to raise money for a worthy cause.

Students in Ms. McLauchlan’s, Mrs. Martin’s and Mrs. Hallowell’s second-grade classes recently collected bottles to recycle and donate the funds to Caribou’s Halfway Home Pet Rescue. Some of the students participating in the bottle drive were, from left,  front row, Kaylee Theriault and Jude Shea; middle row, Nick Pelletier, Sierra St. Peter, Emma Ellis, Ephraim Willey, Darian Langille, Sierra McKissick and Bianka Alejo; back row, Jakeb Pelletier, P.J. McDonough, Kevin Hode, Serae Drake, Keith Moreau and Cameron Belanger.

With the Positive Intervention initiative, the students were rewarded with a coin each time they were “caught” making a wise choice and doing something good. Once the container that had been placed outside of the school’s office was filled with coins, the children were rewarded with a recreational treat.
In February the Caribou Rec. Department set up a bouncy house in the school’s gym and each class was allotted some extra playtime outside of recess on the bouncy house. The purpose of the exercise was to teach the children about the rewards of doing good.
More recently, Ms. McLauchlan’s, Mrs. Martin’s and Mrs. Hallowell’s second-grade classes participated in a bottle drive to raise money for the Caribou Halfway Home Pet Rescue. Again, the children were reminded of the benefit of doing good and the concept of “Passing It On,” by putting effort into collecting the bottles and tallying up the amount of money to be donated to the pet rescue. The total collected was approximately $100.
“The children and staff did a great job, and the children are so excited about this amount,” second-grade teacher  Mary McLauchlan commented.
When the classes make their formal donation to Norma Milton of HHPR, Milton will bring some kittens along to visit with the students.
