On Saturday, March 30, the Island Falls Historical Society will have its spring food sale, which will be held at Jerry’s grocery store, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be a great variety of home-made goodies to select from, including home-made pies and bread. All proceeds will go to help with the  on-going restoration of the historic Tingley house situated by the Mattawamkeag River.

Cheryl and Peter  Connelly have returned to their winter home in Florida for a few weeks and hopefully, when they return the wintry weather will be gone and most of the snow also. Their plans for the opening of the new cafe are going forward during their absence, and if all goes well, it will open in late April or early May.
After the 16 inches of snow arrived last week I have been kept quite busy keeping the area of the bird feeders clear of snow so that I can fill the feeders. The snowplow removed some of the white stuff, but my shovel also went to work to clear the feeders.
Snow falling from my roof didn’t help matters much either, but I think things have greatly improved as we’ve had a bit of sun to melt away a lot of the snow. Still have the cardinals who arrive at least twice a day and they are now eating from the feeders, as I have not put out any seeds on the ground for them.
I spied a cat under the tree looking for birds, so now no seeds on the ground. Still have to make up a big dish of peanut-butter and lard as it goes quite fast when the woodpeckers and bluejays spy it. And it is a great favorite of the nuthatches and chickadees.
Every evening lately have had at least four deer arriving in my back yard and have enjoyed watching them walking carefully through the deep snow. I hurry out with the bread and cut-up apples when I see them and am careful not to let them see me — as they would dash right back into the woods.
