Mapleton town report
art contest winners announced
MAPLETO NEWS
by Jennifer Buzza
The towns of Mapleton, Castle Hill and Chapman hold a town report art contest every year for students at Mapleton Elementary School and students residing in East Chapman. Winners from each grade level are chosen by selectmen and staff at the Town Office. Each winner receives a $15 gift certificate and their art becomes part of the town report. A grand prize winner is then chosen from the grade level winners and they receive an additional $10 and their art becomes the town report cover.

MAPLETON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL fourth-grader Courtney Harding had her artwork chosen to appear on the cover of the 2012 Annual Report for the tri-community. She is the daughter of John and Dina Harding of Mapleton.
TAYLOR DOYEN, a second-grader at Mapleton Elementary School, was one of the top three artists whose work was chosen to appear in the 2012 Town Report. She is the daughter of Shawn and Christi Doyen of Mapleton.
FIFTH-GRADER Rebecca Rider was chosen as one of the top three artists from Mapleton Elementary School for her artwork submission for the 2012 Town Report. She is the daughter of Adam and Angela Rider of Mapleton.
Fourth-grader Courtney Harding was the grand prize winner and her art adorns the cover of the 2012 Annual Report. Rebecca Rider won the fifth grade prize and Taylor Doyen won the second grade prize. At the awards presentation, Principal Dan Duprey read the winners’ names over the school public address system. Courtney’s classmates’ cheers could be heard through the halls when her name was read as the grand prize winner.
Town Manager Jon Frederick presented the girls their personal copies of the annual report, gifts certificates and showed them the annual report from 1901. Maine State Law requires town reports to be maintained permanently, so Courtney’s, Rebecca’s and Taylor’s work have become part of the towns’ history.
Correction
In last week’s Mapleton town news column, an article about Chapman native John Brabant misidentified his mother as Lynne Brabant. Lynne is actually John’s aunt. He is the son of John and Elizabeth A. Brabant of Chapman. We apologize for the error.
An article in the March 13 issue of The Star-Herald on town meetings and municipal elections had an incorrect date for Chapman. The correct information is as follows: Chapman will hold its election and town meeting on Monday, March 25 at 7 p.m. at the Chapman Ridge Runners clubhouse on Town Hall Road. Incumbent Timothy Scott is being challenged by Isaac Braley for one seat as selectman/assessor. We apologize for the error.
