Mullen was recently recognized for his service at a dinner for family and fellow employees, hosted by the company at the Presque Isle Snowmobile Club, where he was congratulated and presented with parting gifts.
A resident of Mars Hill, Mullen worked for the company for 28 years.
“His friendly personality, combined with his building and product knowledge, made him popular with many customers,” said Pat Rathbun, who co-owns the business with her husband, Alden. “As manager of the sales counter, his responsibilities included supervising deliveries, as well as sales.”
During his tenure, there were many changes in the way business was conducted.
“When Roger was hired in 1984, sales were completed with handwritten invoices. Nowadays everything is computerized, and many items are scanned, with invoices e-mailed directly to the customer,” she said. “Products have also changed. In 1984, contractors used hammers and nails to build with wood. Modern contractors now often build with composite materials, using power-driven nail guns. New eco-friendly products are constantly changing the marketplace.”
Rathbun Lumber Co., a Presque Isle business that has supplied lumber and building materials to county homeowners and contractors for 65 years, also recognized other employees for their years of service. They included Alan Archer, 48 years; Blyn Tilley, 40 years; Scott Pinette, 13 years; Susan Tucker, Nelson Michaud and Jamie McLaughlin, all eight years; Lisa Plourde, three years, and John McNamee, one year.
