Cooking with Susie Q

I have enjoyed the response I received after I shared the recipes for the homemade laundry detergent and the homemade dishwasher detergent. I was nearly overwhelmed with your requests for more and many submitted recipes for cleaning compounds. Thank you. I am sharing another recipe for the laundry detergent. This one, sent in by Terry, is a powder instead of a liquid.

I would also like to extend an invitation to you to attend a benefit supper/auction at the Hodgdon Elementary School, March 9, at 4 p.m.
It will benefit Doreen Stewart Ritchie. As many of you know Doreen has been facing several difficulties in the past months and her family, friends and coworkers are doing what we can to help. Stop out, have a great meal, (a great dessert table), visit with family and friends.  There will much to see, many donations have been received and more are coming in right up until the auctioneers gavel comes down. I hope to see you and your families there.

Powdered Laundry Detergent
1 cup borax
1 cup washing soda
1 cup citric acid (Lemon Shine)
1 bar Fell Naptha, grated
Directions: Mix thoroughly.  Makes approximately 32 ounces.
64 loads.  1 Tablespoon per load, 2 Tablespoons for heavily soiled loads.
Homemade Shower/tub cleaner
12 ounces of Dawn dish washing detergent (Key is equal parts dawn and vinegar, try with smaller amount if you like)
12 ounces of distilled vinegar

Directions: Heat the vinegar in the microwave until hot. Add the Dawn and swirl around until the two are incorporated. Pour into a squirt bottle. Spray Shower enclosure, tub and fixtures, let set for at least an hour (can set overnight) wipe down, rinse and admire!
I’m looking forward to hearing from you with any suggestions or recipes you like.   I can be reached at susieqcooking@ainop.com or c/o Pioneer Times, PO Box 456, Houlton, Maine 04730. See you next week!
