Knox couple elopes

on visit to the slopes of Bigrock

MARS HILL NEWS

A couple from Knox showed up at Big Rock to ski on Wednesday night, Feb. 20. But unlike most who come to just ski, they had a marriage license and asked if anyone there could marry them. They were excited to get married and had her three children with them.

A KNOX COUPLE exchanged wedding vows at Bigrock on Feb. 20 during an impromptu ceremony officiated by Notary Jamie Guerrette. Pictured is the wedding party, from left: daughter Cheyenne, Wanda (not sure if she took her husband’s name) and Mike Asay, children Peter and John, as well as family member Dale — all from Knox. Congratulations!

After an evening skiing, they exchanged vows and left as Mr. and Mrs. Due to some quick work and clever planning, Jeff Clockedile, Bigrock’s rental shop supervisor, pulled it off. The couple exchanged vows on the second floor of the lodge surrounded by enthusiastic Bigrock staff and on-lookers. The bride’s three children — Cheyenne, Peter and John — witnessed the ceremony as well as family member Dale and witness Melissa McCrum.

The happy couple, Wanda (not sure if she’s taking her husband’s name) and Mike Asay, reside in Knox. The ceremony was officiated by Notary Jamie Guerrette and Keegan Wakana served as photographer. The couple left with a souvenir lift ticket, souvenir Bigrock glass and sparkling cider, as well as whoopie pies in lieu of wedding cake.

They were very pleased and spoke of returning for their one-year anniversary next year.

While other couples have married during the off season at Bigrock, this marked the first impromptu ceremony during regular business hours.

We wish the couple all the best.

Rotary Club

The Mars Hill Rotary Club met on Tuesday morning, Feb. 19, at 6:30 a.m. at the Aroostook Health Center. The guest speaker was Nancy Chandler of Maine Public Service.

She spoke about the different types of heat pumps — from whole house and geothermal to ductless mini-split heat pumps.

Like a refrigerator, heat pumps use electricity to move refrigerant and transfer heat from one space to another. Refrigerant is naturally much colder than outdoor temperature, even on a cold day, and actually absorbs heat from outdoors. The refrigerant’s properties do this naturally.

Electricity is used to pump refrigerant through copper tubing from outdoors to indoors. Because electricity is used to move heat rather than create heat, heat pumps can deliver up to four times the heat for the electricity used to power the heat pump.

The mini-split style is a clean, comfortable, convenient and a very energy-efficient supplemental source of heat. Heat pumps not only heat, they also cool and dehumidify.

For more information about ductless mini-split heat pumps, call Chandler at 760-2556 or e-mail nchandler@mainepublicservice.com.
