BRIDGEWATER — A jackknifed truck caused a temporary blockage on U.S. Route 1 Monday, with weather being blamed for the accident.
“Maine State Police responded to multiple reports of vehicles off the road and motor vehicle crashes throughout Aroostook County beginning on Sunday, Feb. 17, and continuing through Monday, Feb. 18, due to slippery roads and white-out conditions. State Police encouraged motorists to drive with extreme caution and stay off the roads unless travel was required,” said Sgt. Josh Haines.
Monday’s incident involved a truck driver from Massachusetts who was operating northbound in a 2007 International tractor-trailer unit.
“Michael Callery, 44, of Grafton, Mass., was northbound on Route 1 in Bridgewater. Callery lost control on the icy road going up the hill and jackknifed the trailer truck. The tractor-trailer unit blocked the entire roadway and caused another truck and trailer from Missouri to drive off the road,” Haines said.
DOT and U.S. Border Patrol assisted at the scene with traffic control. No one was injured in the crash. Haines said significant damage was sustained to the passenger and sleeper portions of the tractor. It took a couple hours to fully clear the scene and for traffic to return to normal.
Trooper Shawn Whalen and Sgts. Brian Harris and Haines covered the incidents.
