Hotshots and free throw championships slated

    The Fort Fairfield Parks and Recreation Department will host the local Hotshot Basketball competition again this year.

    The program is for boys and girls ages 9-18, with age determined as of March 31, 2013. Boys compete separate from girls. The various age groups include: 9-10; 11-12; 13-15; and 16-18. Hotshot Basketball is a basketball skills competition that involves shooting from five spots on the basketball court. 

    The top three qualifiers in each age group from Fort Fairfield will be eligible to participate in the Hotshot Regionals in Caribou on Wednesday, Feb. 20.

    The local Hotshot qualifier in Fort Fairfield will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 13 from 6-7:30 p.m. at the community center and again on Friday, Feb. 15 from 4:30-6 p.m. Participants can shoot on one or on both days of qualifying in Fort Fairfield with only the best score from the two days counting.     The Fort Fairfield Knights of Columbus is once again sponsoring the annual K of C Free Throw Championship at the community center on Friday, Feb. 15 from 3-4:15 p.m. The competition is for boys and girls ages 10-14 as of Jan. 1, 2013. Boys compete separate from girls in the five different age groups.  The winner in each age group is determined by the most made free throws out of 15 attempts, with each winner having the opportunity to participate in the K of C District Free Throw Championship that will also be held in Fort Fairfield the following day, Saturday, Feb. 16.

    All winners from the district championship will qualify to compete in the State K of C Free Throw Championship to be held in Old Town on Saturday, March 2. For more information, please contact the recreation department at 472-3882.

Movie matinee in Caribou scheduled for Feb. 20

    The Fort Fairfield Parks and Recreation Department is offering a field trip to the Caribou Theater on Wednesday, Feb. 20 to see a movie at 1:30 p.m. The bus will depart from the community center at 1 p.m. and return to the community center at approximately 3:30 p.m. The cost is $5 per person and includes transportation, movie, popcorn and a soda.  Participants must register prior to the date of the trip and be at least 10 years of age to attend on their own or be accompanied by a responsible chaperone.

Swimming or ice skating trip planned Feb. 21

    A swimming field trip to the indoor pool or a skating trip to the Forum is being offered Thursday, Feb. 21 from 1-3 p.m. The bus will depart from the community center at 12:30 p.m. and return at approximately 3:30 p.m. The cost is $2.50 to swim or free to ice skate (you must provide your own skates or rent from the Forum). Participants must register prior to the date of the trip and be at least 10 years of age to attend on their own or be accompanied by a responsible chaperone.   

NHSC Saturday Morning Kids Ski Club

    The Saturday Morning Kids Ski Club is being held at the Nordic Heritage Center on Saturdays from 10-11:30 a.m. and continues through March 2.

    This program is for all boys and girls in grades 1-8 from throughout Aroostook County and New Brunswick and is designed to teach kids and parents the fun of cross country skiing through games, play, group ski adventures and the use of a terrain park.

    There is no cost to participate in this program as it is being sponsored by TAMC and the NHSC. Sarah Gahagan is the lead instructor. Parents and volunteers are encouraged to help with the program. Skiers must have their own equipment to participate (rentals are available at Fort Fairfield Parks and Recreation Department).

Cross country ski rentals

    A reminder to any students in grades 2-8 that do not have cross country ski equipment of their own that the recreation department will rent out a complete ski package for the entire ski season for only $25 ($20 for each additional sibling). Contact the Parks and Recreation Department to make an appointment to pick up your ski equipment.
