Littleton Ladies Aid formed — On Dec. 11, 1912, the ladies of the Littleton Presbyterian church met for the purpose of organizing a Ladies Aid Society. On Jan. 29 the following officers were elected for the ensuing year: Pres., Mrs. W. J. Watson; Vice Pres., Mrs. J. K. Henderson; Treas., Mrs. John Stephenson; Sec., Mrs. H. E. Hillman; Purchasing Com., Mrs. John Totten and Mrs. Geo. Adams; Work Com., Mrs. Thos. Crawford, Mrs. Fred Bartlett and Miss Jennie E. Watson.

New potato disease — The attention of potato growers is called to an article in this paper by Prof. Chas. Woods, director of the Maine Agriculture Experiment Station, about potato leaf roll, the latest potato disease which has done so much damage to potatoes in this country.

Club hosts Pulitzer poet — Mrs. T. V. Doherty and Mrs. Fred L. Putnam were visitors in Presque Isle to attend a meeting of the Pierian Club at which Bowdoin College Professor Dr. Robert P. T. Coffin was speaker. Dr. Coffin honored Mrs. Althea Brockway in giving the introductory notes to his poem, “The Housing of the Lambs,” from his book, “Strange Holiness,” with which he won the Pulitzer Prize in 1936. The idea which inspired the poem was an anecdote by Mrs. Brockway of her early life on the farm.
Winter grocery staples — Nation-wide Service Grocers advertise the following “Money Saving Values for Winter Menus.” Franco American spaghetti with tomato sauce, 3 1-lb. cans for 27 cents; Nation-wide maple syrup, 12-oz. bottle for 14 cents; Occident flour, 24 lb. bag for $1.23; sour or dill pickles, 18 cents per qt.; a 50-ft. hank of Beaver clothesline for 23 cents; and Baby Arrowroot cookies, 2 pkgs. for 29 cents.

Smaller schools join tourney action — Bridgewater Classical Academy and Island Falls High School will represent Aroostook County in the annual Eastern Maine small school basketball tournament opening Saturday at Brewer High School. The teams earned their spots by emerging winners in regional Class S play where Bridgewater defeated Danforth then St. Martins of Tours High School of Millinocket. At the same time Island Falls turned back Hodgdon High and trounced Mattawamkeag High.
Interstate reaches northward — Preliminary engineering studies of the 32-mile section for proposed Interstate 95 from Medway to Island Falls will begin during fiscal year 1964-1965 with the cost of engineering estimated at $500,000. The Interstate System is scheduled to be completed and open to traffic from Augusta to the Canadian border at Houlton by fall of 1968.

Reducing the federal deficit — Postmaster Leigh Cummings Jr. announced beginning Feb. 15 the Houlton Post Office service counter will be closed on Friday afternoons, noting that box lobby hours remain unchanged and stressed there will be no change in mail delivery schedules. According to Cummings, post offices throughout the nation have been impacted by federal budget deficit reduction measures.
