100 Years Ago-Feb. 5, 1913

Items from Monticello — Miss Kathleen Fraser, teacher of the second grade, who has been home sick, was able to return to her work on Monday. The quarantine has been taken from the different homes in town that have had scarlet fever where all cases have been very light. The Fish and Game Club enjoyed a pleasant time at the Grange Hall Thursday, games were played and luncheon served.
Electric road for Houlton — The following petition has been received by the Legislature at Augusta. “The undersigned citizens of Houlton in the County of Aroostook respectfully represent that

public necessity and convenience requires that an electric road, to be operated by storage battery cars, be constructed along and through the principal streets in the village.”

Lions and Masons unite — Over 90 were present for a supper held at the Mars Hill Masonic Club dining room in which the Masons and members of the Lions Club with their families and guests, united. After the much enjoyed supper, an hour was spent informally in conversation, card playing and billiards. The program concluded with a talk on the mission of Sir Wilfred Grenfell in Labrador.
Electric fence safety — Extension agents and the Aroostook County Farm Bureau offer the following advice. “Don’t build a home-made electric fence.” For the sake of a few dollars it is not worth while to take the risk of injury to yourself or family. An approved controller is one requisite of an electric fence.

Celebrating with celebrities — Miss Diane Botting, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Botting, formerly of Cary Plantation but now residing in Burbank, Calif., celebrated her 15th birthday by visiting the Desilu Studios and watching the Dick Van Dyke television show.

Maine Potato Week begins — The annual observance of Maine Potato Week begins today, lasting through Feb. 16. featuring a state-wide store display contest with $150 in prizes. The purpose is, once again, to advise Maine people of the importance of their potato industry.

Maine Maritime names local scholars — Maine Maritime Academy in Castine has announced the names of those students selected for academic honors for the fall 1987 semester. Among the 119 students to distinguish themselves are Kenneth S. Goodall, Roland D. Pelletier and Sean D. Stevens, all of Houlton, and Andrew D. McKellar of Sherman Mills.
SAD 70 reinstates harvest break — SAD 70 directors voted 10-3 Monday evening to reinstate the district’s three-week harvest recess. Albert Putnam, spokesman for the board’s harvest recess committee, said the previous vote to discontinue harvest recess was a good one at the time but that, “some things have changed since then.”
