“A wonderful time of year to study food,” people often say. Our library has a new series of “A Taste Of Culture,” highlighting foods, and related cultures around the world. We love them all and chose “Foods of Ethiopia” to write of today.
Love Coffee? Oh, yes and it is the favorite drink of Ethopians. They like to share drinking coffee with friends and have a certain ceremony to serve it three times a day when possible.( Pages 34 & 35). This culture also prefers salty, spicy, crunchy foods and seldom eat sugary treats. A recipe for “Spiced Popcorn” is included which brings out cayenne pepper, paprika, cumin and garlic powder.
Contained in these volumes are a wealth of interesting anecdotes plus metric conversions, bibliography, glossary. You’ve likely heard “When in Rome, do as the Romans” so in this country, it is best to be polite and eat only with your washed right hand.
When you can, check out this new series, many of which were donated by companies and individuals in the area to the Children’s Library this past Christmas season.
