In addition to basketball and adult events, the following activities are planned at the Mars Hill and Blaine Community Center:
Thursday, Jan. 31 — Moms-on-the-Go, a walking group meets weekly at the Rec Center from 8-9 a.m. Swimming lessons after school at the Presque Isle pool. Last week’s class was canceled and will be made up at the end of the session.
Friday, Feb. 1 — From 9-10:30 a.m. will be Moms-and-Tots at the Rec. Bring the kids, dry sneakers and any toys they’d like to share for a chance to play in the gym with other little ones. This group meets weekly. Next week on Feb. 8 the toddlers will be celebrating Valentine’s Day! Valentines party with snacks, crafts and games. All children are invited. Movie lounge after school at the Rec. Free, includes popcorn. Concession stand will be open.
The rec department and the CAHS Outing Club will be attending the Winter Carnival in Limestone. Leaving the Rec at 10 a.m. and returning at 2:30 p.m. Dog sleds, snowmobiles, Nordic skiing and more; free! Open to all kids. The Rec and the Outing Club will be going. Please bring lunch money or a bag lunch.
Saturday, Feb. 2 — Ski-4-Life from 10 a.m. to noon at Big Rock. Lift ticket, lesson and equipment provided.
Tuesday, Feb. 5 — After-School Art will be offered at Big Rock. Transportation from Fort Street Elementary School is available. Cost is $3 per child and includes supplies and snack. Parents need to pick kids up at Big Rock by 4:30 p.m.
The Rec Center is open daily from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. for those wishing to walk. Any questions regarding these events, call Jamie at 227-7194.
Fundraiser dinner
On Saturday, Feb. 9, enjoy spaghetti with your sweetheart! This will be a fundraiser for teens attending Revolve 2013, a division of Women of Faith for teens. Dinner will be served at 5 p.m. at the fellowship hall at the Mars Hill Full Gospel Assembly. Humorous video clips and entertainment provided, $25 per couple. Celebrate Valentine’s Day while supporting a great cause. For tickets, please find a girl that is attending or call Tiffany at 227-7195.
Library auction
The Walter T.A. Hansen Memorial Library is holding the fourth annual Walter T.A. Hansen Memorial Library Online Auction from Jan. 15 through Feb. 3. The auction can be found at www.biddingforgood.com.
There are many great items including: a season pass to Big Rock, Mars Hill Country Club passes, autographed items from the Bruins and Patriots, Disney passes, hotel stays, jewelry, UMaine hockey and basketball tickets, an American Girl doll, moto-cross helmet, gift certificates, hand-made items, coffee, tickets to Boston on the Amtrak Downeaster and more.

Mars Hill Utility District
The Mars Hill Utility District gives notice to the public that on Monday, Feb. 25, at 6 p.m. at the Central Aroostook High School Music Room in Mars Hill, a public hearing will be held to discuss and hear comments on a proposed water rate increase. The increase would become affective on April 1, 2013.
A copy of material supporting the proposed rate changes is available at the Mars Hill Utility District, the Mars Hill Town Office or the Blaine Town Office.
Chicken Stew Supper
The Mars Hill American Legion Post 118 Auxiliary will hold a Chicken Stew Supper on Saturday, Feb. 2, from 4-7 p.m. at the Legion Hall beside the dam in Mars Hill. The meal will include stew, rolls, cake, coffee and punch. Cost is $6 for adults and $3 for children under 12.
Heating oil raffle
The American Legion Post 118 in Mars Hill is selling raffle tickets for 100 gallons of heating oil for $5 apiece. Only 200 tickets will be printed and the drawing will be on Feb. 15. If interested, contact any of the Mars Hill American Legion Post 118 Members. The winner can choose who the oil is delivered from.
Birthday calendars
The Rotary Club annual 2013 Birthday Calendars have arrived and are being distributed. They can also be picked up at the Katahdin Trust Company, Mars Hill Town Office, Blaine Town Office or at the Mars Hill IGA. Cost is $6 each.
Rotary Club
The Mars Hill Rotary Club met on Tuesday morning, Jan. 22, at 6:30 a.m. at the Aroostook Health Center. The guest speaker was Sue McCrum, vice president of the American Agri-Women. The organization was founded in 1974 and has over 40,000 members. Sue joined in 2001 and states that agriculture is a large part of the country’s economy, with one in six workers having jobs that are connected to agriculture in one way or another, from actual farm workers to grocery store employees to restaurants.
Women are the head of around 14 percent of the farms around the country. The organization’s goal is to have affiliates in every state in the country. They hold three meetings each year: one in April, a June meeting in Washington, D.C. and their annual meeting in November.

Upcoming events for the week of Jan. 30 through Feb. 5 include: Wednesday will have the Beauty Parlor at 8:30 a.m., Wii Bowling at 9 a.m., Move to the Music at 9:30 a.m., Lunch at the Northeastland at 11 a.m. and Karaoke with Fireman Fred at 1:30 p.m. Thursday will feature the Beauty Parlor at 8:30 a.m., Bingo at 9:30 a.m., Horse Racing at 1:30 p.m. and United Methodist at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 1, is National Wear Red Day and will feature Valentine Jingo at 9:30 a.m. and Karaoke with Fireman Fred at 1:30 p.m. Saturday is Groundhog Day and is a free day. Sunday will have Sunday Service with Jonathan at 1:30 p.m. Monday will include Nail Beautiful at 9:30 a.m., Catholic Mass at 1:30 p.m. and Gospel Group at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 5, will feature Beauty Parlor at 8:30 a.m., Bingo at 9:30 a.m. and Card Games at 1:30 p.m. All of these activities are subject to change.
