Nordic races held in Star City, Caribou

Cold weather put a damper on Thursday’s scheduled races at the Nordic Heritage Center, forcing the cancellation of the meet, but two other events were held as planned.

Last Tuesday, Fort Fairfield hosted a meet at NHC.

In the five-kilometer freestyle race, Katahdin skiers set the pace both for girls and boys.

Hannah Streinz won in 16:00.4 and Lydia Streinz was second in 6:15.9 for the girls’ competition.

Presque Isle’s top performer was Bonnie Corey, who was 13th out of 26 racers in 20:32.8. Danielle Allen, also of the Wildcats, was 16th in 21:55.6.

Leading Fort Fairfield was Sarah Watt, 21st overall in 26:46.

For the boys, Daniel Streinz won in 13:23.9. Jon Rochester of Presque Isle claimed fourth place in 15:01.1.

Jason Bartley of PI finished just out of the top 10. He was 11th in 16:36.2.

Ashland’s Malcolm Milligan was 15th out of 31 finishers in 17:09.3.

Thomas Krause of Fort Fairfield was 28th in 20:30.3.

At Caribou the previous Tuesday, Corey was ninth in the girls’ race in 17:15, while Allen took 13th in 17:42. The race was a 3.5-kilometer classic format.

Veronica Plourde of FF was 17th in 18:05.

On the boys’ side, Lance McKenney of the Tigers had a solid race, placing third in 11:29. Rochester took fifth in 12:03.

Results of Monday’s scheduled races in Fort Kent were not available at presstime.
