Educational professionals invited to an MSSM Open House

LIMESTONE — The Maine School of Science and Mathematics (MSSM) will welcome education professionals from around the state, including participants from Mt. Ararat High School, Sacopee Valley Middle School, Lake Region High School, Morse High School, Lincoln Academy and Leavitt Area High School, for its two-day first annual Education Professionals Open House.

For years MSSM has opened its doors to prospective students and their families hosting multiple open houses throughout the school year. The Jan. 17 event will be held specifically for school counselors and faculty, including Gifted and Talented and STEM instructors.

Attendees will meet with MSSM students from his or her district, participate in presentations by members of the MSSM community, observe classes and enjoy a tour of the former Air Force Base with a Loring Job Corps representative and a local historian serving as tour guides.

“While on my journeys around the state, I learned that many education professionals have not visited MSSM recently and many more have not experienced northern Maine in the middle of winter,” MSSM Director of Enrollment Alan Whittemore said. “This program is designed to update education professionals on Maine’s first and only residential magnet school while also experiencing the beauty of Aroostook County in the winter, and it is 100 percent free of charge.”

Transportation to and from the open house will also be provided. Officials with the town of Limestone have donated the use of a passenger bus, which will make several stops along the I-95 corridor.
