Recreation center hours

The Caribou Wellness and Recreation Center is open for walking and programs Monday through Friday from 6 a.m.-9 p.m. and Saturdays from noon-4 p.m. The center is closed Sundays.

The hours on Martin Luther King Day (Monday, Jan. 21) will be noon-9 p.m.

Youth Ski Rental Program

The Northern Skiers Club and the Caribou Parks and Recreation Department have partnered to bring the Youth Ski Rental Program back to Caribou for all local youth. This year season rentals will be available and include skis, boots, poles and a carrier for a fee. The two package options are: Option 1: $50 per package with a Northern Skier Club membership or Option 2: $60 per package non-member. Both options required an additional $15 security deposit which will be refunded upon return in good condition.  

Men’s 30-and-over basketball

The men’s 30-and-over basketball is under way and meets Tuesday from 7-9 p.m. and Sundays from 10 a.m.-noon. This program is designed for gentlemen 30 years of age and over and meets at the Caribou Wellness and Recreation Center gym. There is a $3 per player fee on Sundays.

Ski 4 Life Program

Once again, Big Rock Ski Area and Caribou Parks and Recreation Department  are teaming up to bring you the Bank of Maine Ski 4 Life Program. This program is for Caribou Middle School students in grades 6-8. Registration fee is $60 which includes transportation, equipment rental, lift ticket and a mandatory group ski lesson.

The dates of the 2013 program are Feb. 27, March 6, 21 and 28. Registration deadline is Feb. 1, 2013 with a minimum of six students and a maximum of 13. For additional information, please contact the Caribou Parks and Recreation Department at 493-4224.

Downtown Caribou Ski Sprint

The fifth annual Downtown Caribou Ski Sprint at Teague Park ski trails will take place Jan. 25 at 4 p.m. Come cheer on the competitors or try the one-kilometer race course. Skiing, snowshoeing and ice skating will be going on into the night under the lights. Everyone is welcome.

MRPA Hotshot competition

The local MRPA Hotshot competition will be held on Friday, Jan. 25 at the Caribou Wellness and Recreation Center. This competition is open to boys and girls ages 9-18. Age is determined as of March 31, 2013.  Warm-ups get under way at 3 p.m., with the competition starting at 4 p.m. Pre-registration is required.

Men’s basketball standings

The standings in the Caribou Men’s Basketball League through Jan. 10 are as follows:

Griffeth Ford (7-1), Loring Job Corps (6-2), Gagnon’s Studio (6-2), Spartans (6-3), Blvd. Graphix (4-3), Road Runners (2-5), AOE (2-7), Pipe Layers (3-7), Purple Cobras (2-8).

Tonight’s schedule includes Pipe Layers vs. AOE at 6 p.m., Loring Job Corps vs. Gagnon’s Studio at 7 p.m. and Blvd. Graphix vs. Griffeth Ford at 8 p.m.

On Monday, July 21, Loring Job Corps vs. AOE at 6 p.m., Griffeth Ford vs. Gagnon’s Studio at 7 p.m. and Spartans vs. Pipe Layers at 8 p.m.
