OULTON – Henry W. Ivey, husband of Marcinne (Sewell) Ivey, passed away after a lengthy illness on Sunday, January 6, 2013. He was born on May 10, 1924 to Edward and Nellie (Kitchen) Ivey. Henry proudly served as a Sergeant in the United States Army from 1943-1946. His tour of duty took him to the European African Middle Eastern Theater Campaign onboard the US Army Hospital Ship, Charles A. Stafford.
Following his honorable discharge from the army, he came back to Houlton and established Ivey’s Radio Cabs. His cabs set his business apart as they were the first two-way radio vehicle system north of Bangor. The Iveys owned and operated the successful taxi business for 17 years before it was sold.
Entering the hospitality business in 1958, he and his wife, Marcinne, established Ivey’s Motel on the Bangor Road in Houlton. Through several expansions, the motel grew to 45 rooms, a full service restaurant, a lounge and weekly live entertainment. In 1985, they launched a second motel, Ivey’s Motor Lodge, a full service hotel, at Interstate 95 in Houlton across from the Tourist Information Center. As a local successful business family, they were proud to serve Houlton and the surrounding area for 55 years.
He was a member of the Monument Lodge of Masons, No. 96 AF & AM, The Aroostook Chapter Royal Arch Masons No. 20, St. Aldemar Commandry No. 17, Anah Temple Shrine and the American Legion. He was also a member of the Houlton Lodge of Elks No. 835.
