CARIBOU — The historic rivalry between Caribou and Presque Isle was alive and well at the Caribou High School gymnasium on Dec. 29, all in the name of a good cause, as Caribou’s Class of 2013 Project Graduation committee hosted a double-header of alumni basketball games.

The effort helped to raise over $1,700 in funds for the class and featured two games: one representing recent alumni players from PI and Caribou, and the other resurrecting the hoop talents of the two towns’ more “seasoned” players. A 50/50 cash drawing was also held along with a half-court shooting competition for the chance to win a free Caribou or Presque Isle alumni T-shirt.

In the younger group, Caribou held off a late-half run from the Wildcats to hold on to a 77-70 victory. Caribou rode the outside shooting efforts of Jarryd Rossignol, 2008, and Matt Till, 2011, who had 24 points and 15 points respectively. Chris Nadeau, 2010, added nine points for the Vikings while Ben Rosser, 2008, chipped in eight points.

For the Wildcats, big men Greg Whittaker, 2006, and Alex Tuttle, 2011, each powered in 15 points. Travis Dyer, 2011, chipped in with 10 points.

The pace died down in the second game of the double feature, but not the excitement. The “old school” Vikings used a heroic late-game three-pointer from Scott Hunter, 1983, to secure a close 53-49 win over rival Wildcats.

Caribou’s Neal Griffeth, 1983, and Ghent Holdsworth, 1990, led the Vikings’ cause with 15 points each. Big man Alan Moir, 1989, added 10 points to help his team.

The Presque Isle team had to borrow some players from their younger alumni, but it was Michael Eaton,  1982, leading the way with nine points, while Scott Griffin, 2000, and Darren Bonville, 1984, added six points.

“Any time you combine hoops with a good cause, it’s a recipe for success,” commented Project Graduation committee member Shelley Massey about the event. “Many great volunteers contributed both their time and resources,” she added.

The event was sponsored by County Physical Therapy, County Qwik Print, Griffeth Ford, Solman and Hunter, and U.S. Cellular.
