100 Years Ago-Jan. 8, 1913

Legislative appointments — Aroostook County’s Senators and Representatives from Houlton took a prominent part in the legislature last week. Hon. C. E. Milliken of Island Falls was elected Senate President, L. E. Thornton was elected Asst. Secretary and Hon. Beecher Putnam was elected a member of the Governor’s Council.
Fire on Mansur Block — An alarm from Box 32 at Fox Bros. corner startled citizens at 10:30 Saturday night, and fire was found to be in the Wakem Store of the Mansur Block. Wakem’s stock was a total loss. Also damaged by the fire were Gillen Millinery, Houlton Trust Co., The Woolworth store, and Wonderland and Barber Shop.

This week’s bargains — On special at M. H. Fishman Co. Inc. this week are: ladies flannel gowns, 39 cents; ladies cotton dresses, 66 cents; 18” x 36” rag rugs, 10 cents each; chocolate “cocoanut” fancies, 10 cents a pound and keyless Maine sardines, 3 cents a can.
Political differences — Taken from the “This Week in Washington” column on the editorial page of the Pioneer Times. WASHINGTON — The lack of cooperation between Congress and the Administration is not altogether a matter of antagonism to the President (Franklin D. Roosevelt), though more and more of that feeling finds expression on Capitol Hill.

Nazarene Church established — The Church of the Nazarene of Maine established a church in Houlton, Sunday, Jan. 6, when District Superintendent Rev. J. C. Wagner organized the group of 35 persons who had been meeting at the local V. F. W., into a formal church.

BS-FromFiles-dc-pt-2RETIRES — After 30 years of serving the Pioneer Times as its Island Falls correspondent, Mrs. Alice McKenzie retired. A life-long Island Falls resident, her position would remain “in the family” as her daughter, Mrs. John Hulbert, assumes the position.

“Right to Work” in the news — Frank Rowe, executive secretary of Maine Citizens for Industrial Peace told a Jaycees gathering here Tuesday night that the so called “Right to Work” proposal is legislation that will “weaken the democratic process.” Walter F. Tweedie of Mars Hill, executive director of Maine Citizens for Right to Work, today announced that the army of volunteer petition circulators have secured over 24,000 signatures and are winding up the huge drive this week.

Women in media — The American Association of University Women, Houlton Chapter, will meet Monday hosted by Carol McGary. The topic for the evening will be “Women in the Media” with speakers WAGM Channel 8 News Director Sue Bernard and Bangor Daily News Houlton Bureau Chief Tamara Hill.

Panthers post winning record — The Central Aroostook Panthers girls basketball team has improved its record to 9-1 as the Panthers posted back-to-back wins this past week. Julie Bradstreet had an outstanding performance as she poured in 25 points for the Panthers.
