Hoop season begins at rec

    PRESQUE ISLE — In the kickoff to the Presque Isle Recreation and Parks Department’s 2012-13 third- and fourth-grade basketball season, the boys hit the hardwood first. The Indiana Hoosiers matched up with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.

  The game was a seesaw battle from the get go. Indiana’s Jude Mosher led the way with six points while Jackson Maynard and Asher Tuttle chipped in four points each. On the other side of the court, Notre Dame’s Chance Bragan and Mason Fletcher both tossed in six points with Brandon Dubie adding a foul shot and LeRoy Gardiner a bucket to the total as their team squeaked out the 15-14 win.

    The following matchup brought UConn and Florida together. Connecticut had three scorers on the board with Ben Duprey, Holden Zuras and Jordan Wood all making a basket. As for Florida, Jacob Watt had all six of his Gators’ points to have the game finish in a 6-6 tie.

    The final game of the day featured a classic matchup, with Duke and North Carolina going head to head.  UNC’s Holden Stoutamyer and Ben Ryan led the way with four points each, while Cody Barnes and Ian MacKinnon both added a bucket and Jacob Devine made a free throw. The Blue Devils were led by Xavier McAtee and Jacob Smith, who both contributed three points.  However, Carolina won the first matchup 13-6.

    In the second day of boys’ basketball, Notre Dame and Duke faced off. Notre Dame notched 16 points to Duke’s seven, with Bragan scoring eight of them and Fletcher, Zachary Jalbert, Iziah Lessard and Gardiner all adding a basket. Duke’s attack was a one-man show with McAtee scoring all of his team’s points.

    The first girls’ game followed, with the Terriers and Huskies matching up. The Terriers’ Meg Casavant and Jenna Sargent led the way with 10 points each, while Madison Hedrich and Delaney Alward both added a hoop. The Huskies’ played a great game, but came up a little short.

    Going back to boys’ action, the Florida Gators and Carolina Tar Heels battled it out in a great game. The Gators’ Braedon Sargent led all scorers with a season-high 18 points. As for UNC, Barnes led the way with six, followed by Devine with five, Ryan with four and Stoutamyer with two. Florida gained its first win, 18-17.

    In the next game, Connecticut and Indiana were both in search of their first win. UConn was led by Wood and Zuras with four points each. Indiana fought hard but came up short with Mosher and Tyler Farnham adding the only baskets for their team. UConn came out on top, 8-4. 

    In the next day of games, Indiana and Florida showcased their talents. Indiana’s Mosher had eight points with Maynard and Tuttle both adding six. On the Gators’ side, Sargent broke the season-high point total by tallying 20 points of his own in a 20-20 tie.

    Duke and UConn then met on the court in search of a win. Duke was led by Gage LeTourneau’s game-high 15 points with Smith, McAtee and Avery Tompkins all adding a basket to the team total.  UConn had some struggles to get the ball to fall with Noah Corriveau netting three points along and Wood, Karsen Winger and Clint Goheen all chipping in with baskets. Duke earned its first win, 23-9.

    In the final game of the session, Notre Dame and North Carolina matched up. Fletcher led the way for the Irish with eight points followed by Bragan and Gardiner with two each. North Carolina was just too much with Devine leading the way with 10 points, Barnes with six points and Ryan with four in the 20-12 victory.

    The next day of basketball brought the girls in first followed by the boys. The girls’ game was a fantastic battle between the Black Bears and Huskies. The Black Bears attack was led by Faith Sjoberg scoring eight, Bethany Baker added six and Portia Shaw two. The Huskies kept their noses to the grindstone exchanging baskets throughout the game and finally pulling off the thrilling 17-16 victory.

    In the late game, the Gators and Tar Heels battled it out. For the Gators, Sargent led the way with 15 with Ryllan Thibeault adding four and Clay Gregg chipping in with two. On the other bench, UNC’s Barnes had a game-high 19 points to help put his team on top. Also adding to the point total was Devine with six, Stoutamyer with five and Ryan with two as the Tarheels won again, 32-21.

    The following day, Notre Dame and UConn played. Notre Dame won 18-4 and was led by Bragan with 10, while Fletcher and Gardiner both added four. UConn had two scorers on the board with Wood and Duprey scoring two points each.

    In the final game of the week, Duke took on Indiana. Cavin Cleaves scored 10 points to pace Duke’s offense in the 23-12 triumph. Tompkins had five and LeTourneau and Smith added four each. As for Indiana, Mosher posted all 12 points.

    In the first game of a heated doubleheader matchup in the girls’ league, the Huskies and Terriers converged on the hardwood. In the first game, Izabelle Higgins scored 10 points for her Huskies with Hattie Bubar adding seven of her own. As for the Terriers, Casavant tallied 10 points with Sargent adding four in the 17-14 victory.

    In game two, Bubar had a game-high seven points with Emily Bemis adding a basket and Higgins a foul shot. For the Terriers, Casavant had six points and Sargent two, but the Huskies completed the sweep with a 10-8 win.
