PRESQUE ISLE – The Grinch is alive and well in the Star City and has made his presence known at Catholic Charities, where an employee had her wallet stolen Dec. 15.
“Someone stole a worker’s wallet while she was working her butt off to try to get through Christmas,” said Dixie Shaw, director of Catholic Charities, which has thrift stores in Presque Isle and Caribou.
Shaw said the wallet was later found discarded, minus $700 in cash, at a restaurant on Main Street.
“I guess whoever stole it must not have kids, since they left a Toys R Us gift card,” Shaw said.
Shaw expressed sympathy for the woman’s loss, noting, “Ange McCarty, I know that every one of those dollars in her wallet were hard-earned.”
Since the incident, Shaw shared the news with Facebook friends, who in turn have teamed up to try to turn what could have been a bad Christmas into one of hope and faith in fellow man.
Jamie Guerrette, of Mars Hill, has joined several others in trying to raise funds for McCarty, who has two children.
“As I’m sure you have heard, Dixie has written regarding someone stealing Ang’s money while at work. Some folks have contacted me about making donations, which can be anonymous,” said Guerrette in a message to friends online.
Guerrette said she’d be willing to pick up and deliver donations to Shaw, prior to McCarty’s planned shopping trip Wednesday.
“Dix helps so many, let’s rally around her and help Ang,” Guerrette said.
Guerrette said for those wishing to make an anonymous donation, Wintergreen Arts Center officials have agreed to serve as a collection site.
“Dixie’s said money can be sent right to Catholic Charities for Angela. Make sure you state that it is for Angela McCarty so when it is received, Debbie Pelkey and Vince Curtis know what it’s for. Donations can be sent to: Catholic Charities Maine, PO Box 478, Caribou, ME04736,” said Guerrette.
“I think it will blow her socks off,” she continued.
“Merry Christmas and may those that give be blessed,” said Guerrette.
