FK meet kicks off ski season
FORT KENT — High school skiers took to the trails last Tuesday for a Nordic ski meet held at the 10th Mountain Ski Center.
The meet was the first of the season for varsity teams. The next is scheduled for Thursday at the Nordic Heritage Center in Presque Isle.
In the boys’ Nordic competition at Fort Kent, Karman Husain of the host Warriors won the sprint race in a time of 7 minutes and 54 seconds. He was 12 seconds faster than runner-up Jon Rochester of Presque Isle, who recorded a time of 8:06.
Dan Streinz of Katahdin took third place in 8:08, with Fort Kent’s Matt Toussaint (8:50) and Madawaska’s Darin Jandreau (9:00) rounding out the top five.
Presque Isle’s Jason Bartley grabbed the sixth-place position in 9:06. Joel Shay and Gannon Therrien garnered top-20 performances.
Malcolm Milligan of Ashland placed 22nd in 10:11 and Fort Fairfield’s Lance McKenney was 30th in 11:11 to lead their teams.
The girls’ race was dominated by Katahdin sisters Hannah and Lydia Streinz, who finished one-two in the standings. Hannah won in 8:45 and Lydia was next in 9:08.
For the Wildcats, Bonnie Corey grabbed the 11th slot in 11:28 to lead her squad.
Danielle Allen took 15th place in 12:07.
Veronica Plourde came in 13th place in 11:48 as Fort Fairfield’s fastest skier.
The first alpine ski meet was scheduled for Saturday at Fort Kent and another one is planned for Saturday, Dec. 29 at Big Rock Ski Area in Mars Hill.
