Santa Paws a great success
By Christine Cowett Robinson
Special to The Star-Herald
Pictures with Santa Paws was a great success again this year. The decorations were amazing, thanks to our very own Sharon Brown, who searches high and low at yard sales throughout the summer for new items to adorn Santa’s room at the shelter.
Our staff did an awesome job putting it all together and making it warm and cozy for pictures. This event takes a lot of planning, but the Central Aroostook Humane Society staff, board members and volunteers work hard to do lots of fundraisers to raise money for the animals. It is also wonderful to see so many donations under our tree; every donation counts.
“A Shelter Dog’s Christmas”
Tis the night before Christmas
And all through the town
Every shelter was full
We were lost but not found
We were left in the back yard
or worse left to roam
Now we are tired and lonely
and out of a home
Our numbers are hung
On our kennels so bare
We hope every minute
That someone will care
They dropped us off here
and they kissed us good-bye
“maybe someone else will
give you a try”
They’ll come to adopt us
And give us a call
come here Max and Sparky
come fetch your new ball”
So now we are here
confused and alone
in a shelter with others
who long for a home.
But now we sit here
And think of the days
We were treated so fondly
We had cute baby ways
We lay down to sleep
and sweet dreams fill our heads
of a home filled with love
and our own cozy beds.
Once we were little
Then we grew and we grew
Now we are no longer young
And we are no longer new
Then we wake to see sad eyes
Brimming with tears
our friends filled with emptiness
worry and fear
So out the back door
We were thrown like the trash
They reacted so quickly
Why were they so rash?
If you can’t adopt us
And there is no room at the inn
could you help with the bills
And fill up our food bin?
We should have been neutered
We should have been spayed
Now we suffer the consequence
Of the errors they made
We count on your kindness
each day of the year
Can you give more than hope
to everyone here?

Pets are not good to give as Christmas gifts. If you would like to give a pet as a gift, be sure it is a gift the recipient wants and can care for. Consider waiting until after the rush of the holidays and picking out a new pet as a family, instead of letting the magic of bringing a new life into your family get lost in the presents and excitement of Christmas.
If you are looking for ways to help the animals at the Central Aroostook Humane Society, we are in need of the following items: Bleach, cat litter (non-scoopable), paper towels, laundry detergent, dish detergent, cat toys, dog toys, wet cat food, old blankets and towels, you can also make a donation towards having a pet altered. Items can be dropped off Tuesday-Saturday, during regular business hours, at CAHS, 26 Cross Street in Presque isle.
Happy holidays! Please have your pets spayed or neutered.
