A snowless season — The Bank Farm Mill closed last week as there is not snow enough to permit the teams to haul. A number of young people enjoyed themselves on the ice this past week, the skating being unusually good.
Christmas gift ideas — Hatheway Drug Co., 60 Main St., Houlton offers the following gift ideas. For the gentleman: a box of high grade cigars, strops, shaving brushes and shaving sets and cribbage boards. For the ladies: sewing sets, hat brushes, toilet waters, ink wells and chocolates in fancy packages.

Christmas wedding — Miss Ruth Wheeler was the honored guest on Friday at a shower party given by Mrs. J. H. Farley Jr. and Miss Madeline Slipp, at the Farley home. Miss Wheeler, who has for the past two years been a teacher in the Mars Hill grade school is on Christmas Day to marry Howard Slipp of Bridgewater.
Cary’s Mills club news — The Golden Goose Club of Cary’s Mills held their annual Christmas party at the home of Mrs. Porter, Porter’s Settlement. A program was presented which included a history of the club since its origin in 1927 and it was voted during the business session to change the name to the Three Rivers Club, taking the name appropriately from the junction of the rivers at this point. The following officers were elected: president, Mrs. Herman Porter; secretary, Mrs. Hadley Boutilier; treasurer, Mrs. Albert Somerville; business manager, Mrs. L. G. Boutilier and reporter, Mrs. Thomas Callnan.

New District court — The New Southern District Court will begin hearing cases in Houlton this morning with the recently appointed Judge Julian Turner presiding. At ceremonies marking the opening of the new court, Judges Chapman, Turner and associate judge-at-large Robert Browne took part with County Attorney John O. Rogers acting as master of ceremonies.
Mars Hill Rotary speaker — Dr. George Higgins of Presque Isle was guest speaker at the regular Rotary meeting Wednesday evening. Introduced by Dr. Douglas Timms, he spoke about his “hobby” of flying, or as he called it, “soaring.” Clifford Weiden of Presque Isle was a visiting Rotarian at the meeting.

Labels for schools — For the past year, the United Methodist Church School has been collecting Campbell Soup Company labels to benefit the Roger Randall Development Center and recently was able to deliver 5,000 labels to be used for equipment purchase.
Houlton artists on display — One of the “New Year’s Eve Houlton attractions will be an art show at Cary Library featuring photography by John Myers and Eugene Jackins; wood carvings by Bruce Burnham; pottery by Dave Gricus and Susan Glick; quilts from Robin Mosenfelder and Diane Hines; weaving by Janet Campbell; sculpture by Glenn Hines; wood crafts by Tor and Lorna Smith and Bob Snyder; harp maker Jay Witcher; and the paintings of Claudette Gagnon, Jean Brady, Esthner Faulkner, Winnie Ireland and Audrey York.
