“The Maine Policy Scholars program seeks to foster a stronger interest among students in community-based public policy research in Maine,” said MaineCF President and CEO Meredith Jones.
“The scholars program provides students an opportunity to experience Maine’s open public policy process and at the same time make a meaningful contribution to our future,” said program chair and former State Senator Libby Mitchell.
During the course of the academic year, scholars work with a faculty advisor to tackle a policy issue currently facing Maine. After conducting extensive research, the student produces a final report in the form of a memo to the governor or appropriate policymaker, which outlines the issue and the data available, and offers policy solutions. In the late spring, the scholars present their reports in the form of a briefing to a panel of policymakers.
The late Peter Cox established the Maine Scholars Fund at MaineCF in 1987. The Maine Policy Scholars program was introduced in 1995 and is managed by the Maine Community Foundation, with input from an advisory committee.
