Red ribbons to support World AIDS Day
PRESQUE ISLE — Dec. 1, 2012 is recognized as World AIDS Day. The 2012 theme for World AIDS Day is “Working Together for an AIDS-Free Generation.”
To help raise awareness about HIV and AIDS, community members are asked to wear a red ribbon during the month of December.
To help recognize the importance of World Aids Day and “Working Together,” ACAP Health Services will provide no cost testing at their Presque Isle and Houlton sites Friday, Nov. 30 and their Fort Kent site Monday, Dec. 3. To encourage awareness, ACAP will provide no cost testing events at local college campuses in the county. For more information, contact the University of Maine at Presque Isle at 768-9586, or Northern Maine Community College at 768-2803.
All testing is anonymous, confidential and needle-free with results provided during the visit.
Current records indicate that 1,633 of Maine’s residents are infected with HIV.
The U.S. CDC estimates that 79 percent of people living with HIV know their status, therefore estimates of the total number of Mainers living with HIV is 2,067 (approximately 434 people living with undiagnosed HIV).
