CARIBOU — Officials with MMG Insurance in Presque Isle have pledged $10,000 for the new Women’s Imaging Center project at Cary Medical Center. The Caribou hospital is in the final stages of an $800,000 capital campaign for the construction/renovation project in the hospital’s radiology department. The new imaging center will offer state of the art digital mammography and stereotactic breast biopsy, as well as a unique patient navigation program with a breast care coordinator to assist patients as they experience various exams and follow-up procedures with their medical team.
“Our new patient navigator program is designed to enhance access to all aspects of breast care at Cary by helping to provide more efficient delivery of care, improved sharing of resources and removal of barriers to care, all through enhanced relationships with each of our patients,” explained Dr. Shawn Laferriere, medical director of radiology at Cary.
“It’s our goal to not only bring advanced state-of-the-art technologies to northern Maine, but to also create an overall breast-care program designed at improving the coordination of high-quality breast care. This means providing same-day diagnostic mammography results for our patients with the opportunity to meet with one of our radiologists and review their exam one-on-one, so that each patient understands their results before they leave the center.”
To complement the new technology and the patient navigation program, the center will also provide a “spa-like” private patient waiting area and individual changing rooms with personal lockable armoires.
“MMG is pleased to partner with Cary Medical Center on this important project, which stands to positively impact many throughout our area,” Matthew McHatten, MMG executive vice president and COO, commented on the Women’s Imaging Center and the insurance company’s corporate donation in support of the project. “The combination of a holistic, patient-centered approach and new treatment methods promises to increase the capabilities of our region in proactively dealing with this serious threat to many.”
Mary Harrigan, executive director of the Jefferson Cary Foundation, said that the gift from MMG Insurance represents another project milestone.
“This generous donation from MMG Insurance brings our project total to just over $720,000,” stated Harrigan, who is coordinating the capital campaign. “This is the largest capital campaign we have ever conducted, including the building of the new hospital facility here in Caribou. We are very grateful to MMG Insurance and all of our corporate sponsors for their support.”
The new Women’s Imaging Center project is expected to be completed and operational by mid-December.
