The right side of history

To the editor:
Well, it finally happened. After a heartbreaking loss in 2009, an egregious wrong has been undone. Same-sex couples are finally able to marry in Maine.
I did what little part I could. I displayed my yard sign, I placed a bumper sticker on my car, I shared news articles and editorials via Facebook and participated in a phonebank session in Presque Isle. Yet until the final numbers came in, I had no idea how this would go. It is tremendously refreshing to wake up in the morning and realize that I live in a state that has chosen to be on the right side of history.
To those who voted against this (and I know you are many based on the volume of “No” signs around here), my only hope is that you will see how little your lives will be affected like this. Most of you probably don’t know a single gay person to begin with and your votes were cast based on fear of the unknown. We do not want to adversely affect your lives in any way. All loving same-sex couples want is what you have, and I’m so happy to think that something that encourages even more love and commitment has become a reality here in Maine.
As of this moment, I am truly proud to be an American again.
