Koch places 28th in New England

    CUMBERLAND — The New England Cross Country Championships were held Saturday at Twin Brook Recreation Center, with Washburn’s Carsyn Koch placing 28th overall out of 265 competitors in the girls’ five-kilometer race.

    Koch, a junior who recently captured the Class C state title for the third consecutive year, had a time of 20 minutes, 1.58 seconds in Saturday’s event.

    Beaver sophomore MacKenzie Worcester came in 210th with a time of 22:41.02 and junior Carmen Bragg was 230th in 23:07.18.

    Also competing for Washburn were freshmen Emilia Churchill and Laina Mette and sophomores Hannah Heald and Marianne Helton.

    The Beavers had qualified as a team for the New England meet by winning the Class C state meet held in Belfast October 27.

    The best showing by a Maine runner was turned in by Waterville’s Bethanie Brown, who was seventh overall in 19:18.6. The race winner was Elle Purrier of Richland, Vt., who came in at 18:42.44.

    The winner of the boys’ race was Henry Wynne of Staples, Conn. in 16:12.86. The fastest Maine runner was Fryeburg’s Silas Eastman in 16:26.09, putting him third overall out of 267.
