New Sweden man killed in auto accident on icy roads

CARIBOU — An early morning two-vehicle accident on the Van Buren Road in Caribou claimed the life of a New Sweden man on Nov. 8.

Matthew Turnbull, 23, of New Sweden, was traveling south just before 6 a.m. in a 2000 GMC Sierra when he collided with a northbound 2004 Ford Explorer driven by Edmond St. Pierre, 48, of Caribou, according to information released by Caribou Police Chief Michael Gahagan.

Both drivers were taken by ambulance to Cary Medical Center where Turnbull was pronounced dead, Gahagan said in the release.

St. Pierre was treated for his injuries at the hospital.

Road conditions at the time of the accident were described by Gahagan as icy and unsanded.

Matthew Cummings of the Caribou PD, assisted by Officer Jason Matheson, investigated the accident.

Also assisting at the accident were members of the Caribou Fire and Ambulance Department and the Maine Warden Service.
