Remembering Gov. John Reed
To the editor:
John Reed will be remembered by many in different ways. He will be remembered in the First Masonic District as a leader who applied his Masonic lessons both in the lodge and for the public which he served for 31 years.
JOHN H. REED as Master of Eastern Frontier Lodge in Fort Fairfield.
He was raised a Master Mason on April 9, 1946 in Eastern Frontier Lodge in Fort Fairfield and served the lodge as Master in 1952. His father and brother were both members of the lodge.
In 1991, after Eastern Frontier Lodge had closed, he was about to join a lodge in Virginia when an invitation was extended by Monument Lodge in Houlton to affiliate with them. He readily accepted the offer as he wished to keep his Aroostook County connection to Maine Masonry. He was one of the guest speakers at the dedication of the George Washington Maine Masonic Monument in Houlton in 1999.
This past spring he shared with this writer that this would be the first year in his life that he would not be back to Fort Fairfield. He quickly added that he wanted to be remembered to all his brethren.
While he will be remembered and missed as a Brother, he had an exceptional career in public service which took him far from his Fort Fairfield roots which always served him well. In 1955 he entered politics as a Maine Representative to Augusta. He served as Governor of Maine for seven years from 1959-1966 and two tours as Ambassador to Sri Lanka between 1976 and 1985.
He will be remembered by all as the Aroostook County man who met with success and remained one of us.
