FS-Rotary literacy-dcx-pt-45The Houlton Rotary Club hosted a literacy day for Houlton Elementary students in the second and third. The guest speaker was Tim Caverly, author of several children’s books that take place on the Allagash Wilderness Waterway. Caverly educated the children about his job as a Maine Forest Ranger on the Allagash. He took the kids on a 92-mile journey via power point up the Allagash Waterway. The children learned about the animals that live on the river, the artifacts to be found on the river and how the river was formed many years ago by glaciers. He also told the kids about his books that all have stories that come from experiences he and his family have experienced on the the waterway and in the woods of Northern Maine. The Houlton Rotary club purchased 20 copies of his first book “Allagash Tails Vol. I” to give away for students to take home to read with their families and purchased an additional 25 copies to donate to the library at the Houlton Elementary School. These books can be shared for years to come in the classrooms and in the library.
