COUNTY PATRIOTS YOUNG MARINES served as the Color Guard during festivities marking the grand opening of the Dollar Tree store at the Aroostook Centre Mall in Presque Isle on Oct. 20. Drug prevention and education is a key element in the Young Marine’s message to the youth in their communities.
The County Patriots spent several hours learning about the story of Enrique Camerena and what Red Ribbon Week is all about. Red Ribbon Week is celebrated the last week in October each year.
The unit is planning to hold more Red Ribbon activities throughout the year leading up to the last week in October 2013. This will give members more opportunities to reach out to the community with a drug prevention awareness message.
For this year’s activities, Rent-A-Center at the Aroostook Centre Mall donated a TV for the day to use with the game “Ask, Listen, Learn, Interactive.” The interactive game included activities with running, jumping, dancing and side stepping. It incorporated random questions and answers throughout the game that challenged the knowledge of participants on health decisions and the dangers of underage drinking. This was very popular as many young people and their families stopped by and engaged in this activity.
Red ribbons were also passed out, along with the story of DEA Agent Enrique Camerena, free pamphlets from The Century Council “How to Talk to Your Adolescent About Alcohol” and “You Are What You Drink,” and the Elks Drug Awareness Program “The Truth About Tobacco” and “What You Should Know About Marijuana.”
