LIMESTONE — There’s a new face behind the helm at the Limestone Recreation Department, and she’s very excited to be there.

Sara Martin, originally from the Sugarloaf area, started her new job with the town on Oct. 23.

“It’s been awesome — everyone has been really welcoming and supportive here,” Martin said.

Martin holds a bachelors’ degree in community health education, an associates degree in sports management and is working on her masters’ degree in sports management with a focus on recreation management; she’s also a certified personal trainer, with a specialization in strength training.

“I’m extremely excited, this is exactly what I wanted to do,” she said. “Especially in Limestone — I’ve heard great things about the town and the recreation department,” she adding, being sure to mention that her predecessor, Amanda Brooker, had done a great job with the department before her.

Martin was quick to assure Limestone residents that the programs that they’ve come to love through the rec department will continue, and she’s looking to add a couple extra programs, too.

She’s been in contact with officials from UMPI’s Physical Education Club, for instance, about possibly bringing one of their “Fit and Fun” days to Limestone, and she’s talked with the Limestone Snowhawks about the possibility of hosting a snowmobile safety course.

With her background, Martin is looking to bring in a lot the educational elements and fitness classes to the rec and is willing to work with the community to find out what additional program they’d like to see offered.

“I’m very open to whatever the community wants,” Martin said.

With much excitement, members of the community have been discussing the arrival of a new bus for the Limestone Recreation Department, purchased with the understanding that the former director would be obtaining the special license to operate the bus. With the new bus just another facet of her department, Martin said that she’s willing to get the special license to drive Limestone’s bus, as well as any other certifications the town would like her to obtain.

While Martin has already began working with community members of all ages on programs and potential programs, existing activities are sign-up ready, like the pee-wee basketball and the BIO (By Invitation Only) Ski Club for fourth- and fifth-grade students.
