1897: Winds topple Collins’ smoke stacks

115 Years Ago- Nov. 11, 1897

• During strong winds Tuesday evening, a tree fell across the smokestack stays at S. W. Collins & Son’s mill on Water Street, causing both smoke stacks to fall over.

• J. S. Getchell & Son’s engine house caught fire Wednesday evening. The building is small and the exterior is covered with iron. Damage was slight.

100 Years Ago-Nov. 7, 1912

Local entertainment — Pitt Parker, humorist, lecturer, cartoonist, artist and comedy clay modeler will be the attraction at the opera house. Calewell and Pilton, direct from the Bijou Theater, Bangor, appear in high class vaudeville at the new Gem Theater this week.

Mischief afoot — Sneak thieves are abroad. One of them entered the cellar of Rev. Harry Adams Hersey one night during the past week and confiscated a dozen jars of peach preserves. One of the large plate glass windows in R. N. L. Brown’s dry goods store was broken last week by boys throwing stones.

75 Years Ago-Nov.11, 1937

Milky mishap — Hundreds of quarts of Aroostook milk were spilled on the main highway near Houlton recently when the Walter Cone milk truck and an automobile driven by Roy Thompson of Limestone collided near the Watson filling station.

A&P weekly specials — It’s “Thrift Week” the Caribou A&P with the following advertised specials: Red Circle Coffee, 20 cents a lb.; Palmolive Soap, 4 cakes for 25 cents; Ritz Crackers, 19 cents a package and MacIntosh Apples, 5 lbs. for 29 cents.

50 Years Ago-Nov. 8, 1962

Another Romney — The Republican reports the following Nov. 6, 1962 election results: Headline: “Kennedy, Rockefeller, Romney, Scranton Win: Nixon Loses to Brown.” GOP stalwarts of the day were George Romney of Michigan, former head of American Motors, and William Scranton, scion of a family of Pennsylvania rail-makers, successful in their respective bids for the governorship of politically potent states.

At the theater — The following films were featured at the Caribou and Powers theaters this week: “The Bird Man of Alkatraz” with Burt Lancaster; “The Enemy Below” with Robert Mitchum and Curt Jurgens; “The Tower of London” with Vincent Price; and “Requiem for a Heavyweight” featuring Anthony Quinn.

Latest technology — A workshop to inform consumers about purchasing and operating VCR machines and video recorders (camcorders)  will be presented by Kirk Tibbetts of Tibbetts TV and Appliance.

In the service — Veteran’s Day, Nov. 11, 1987. Army National Guard Pvt. Roger L. O’Neal, son of Sharon and John O’Neal of Caribou has completed basic training at Fort Jackson, S. C.; Marine Lance Cpl. Mel A. Beaulieu, son of Melvin A. Beaulieu of Presque Isle recently departed Morehead City, N. C. as part of the Navy’s Landing Force, Sixth Fleet, 22nd Marine Amphibious Unit, Camp Lejeune, N. C.; Anthony C. Johndro, son of Guildor W. and Anne G. Johndro of Limestone, has been promoted in the U.S. Air Force to the rank of first lieutenant.
