A day of gridiron action

Saturday will be a historic time for Houlton High School sports as the varsity football team takes the home field for the first time since 1949. Appropriately the game is a homecoming of sorts and “Senior Day.”
The varsity game will pit the Houlton High Shires (5-1) against the Caribou Huskies. Prior to the varsity game, seniors Sam St. John, Lucas Flewelling, Cyruss Brooker, Ryan Baptista and Jon Ramsey will be honored, along with their parents for their contributions to the program.
Houlton Head Coach Brian Reynolds predicts a lot of action between the previous AFL rival Huskies and Houlton.
“We have a lot of history in that league and look forward to playing them,” said Reynolds.
    Kick-off time is set for 1:30 p.m.
The Houlton Football Association President Ben Drew announced there will be a drawing for the grand prize of tickets and expense money to a Bruins or Celtic’s game in Boston at halftime of the varsity game. Tickets will be available at the game.
“I hope the community comes out to watch the team and show the support for the kids that is a hallmark of Houlton,” said Drew.
For those who enjoy the game, the day promises to be a football fan’s heaven. The prelim game will feature the undefeated Houlton Junior High team against Washington Academy, weather permitting, at 11 a.m. at Bob Ruth Field.
As of presstime Hurricane Sandy is being factored into the field conditions for the preliminary game. Entertainment, souvenirs, concessions and raffles will be the order of the day. Admission is free.
