The season came to an end for several local soccer teams in either the quarterfinal or semifinal round of the Eastern Maine playoffs.
The Presque Isle boys lost 2-0 to their arch-rival Caribou Vikings in last Wednesday’s quarterfinal match played in Caribou.
“We couldn’t match their speed, quickness and dominance out of the air,” said PI coach Joe Greaves. “We never got a chance to really possess the ball and work it up the field to get good scoring opportunities.”
Nolan McDuffie and Dean Walker scored Caribou’s goals. PI goalie Cody Lyford was solid in defeat, saving 10 of 16 shots.
ON THE MOVE — Easton’s Mariah Cyr races past a Deer Isle-Stonington defender during last Tuesday’s playoff match, won by the Bears, 3-1. Easton then lost to PVHS Friday, 1-0.
The Easton girls made it into the semifinals before losing at home to Penobscot Valley, 1-0. The lone goal of the game came with 12:29 to play in the first half when Amy Hallett drilled a shot from 35 yards out that went over the head of Easton goalie Hannah Ferris and into the net.
“We controlled the ball most of the first half and got a lot of shots on goal, but we just couldn’t get it by their strong defense,” said Bear coach Rachel Tomlinson.
Easton had beaten DI-Stonington in the quarters last Tuesday, 3-1, on goals by Carla Halvorson, Taylor Brown and Kylee Carter.
The Easton boys were blanked by Bangor Christian in last Wednesday’s quarterfinal, 5-0.
“They were head and shoulders above any team we saw all year,” said Easton coach Ryan Shaw. “They have a balanced scoring attack and their defense keeps you out of their offensive third.”
The Ashland girls dropped a 2-1 decision to PVHS in the quarters. Last Tuesday’s game came down to penalty kicks and the Howlers prevailed. Savannah Flint scored the lone Hornet goal.
