Participants in the Caribou Wellness and Recreation Centers’ Take It Outside series traveled to Smyrna Oct. 16 for a guided tour of the Amish Community.

Stops along the tour included visits to the one-room school house where 21 of the community’s children sang songs to the group, followed by a drive by of some of the other businesses including a visit to the furniture making factory as a tour of the Sonnental Dairy, Aroostook County’s only cheese maker. After lunch at Brookside Inn, the group visited Shakaree Red Deer Farm, where 900 head of deer live on a 1,000-acre New Limerick farm. Shown in the Sonnental Dairy processing room, from left, are Doris Nadeau, Thelma Morin, Barb Thompson, Linda Norsworthy, Marie Staples, Pauline Emond, Thelma Morin, Jeanette Searles and Verna Espling.

The second adventure on Thursday, October 18, 2012 brought fantastic weather and allowed participants in the Caribou Wellness and Recreation Centers’ Take It Outside program to head deep into the North Maine woods for a visit to Bradford Camps on Munsungan Lake. Hosts Igor and Karen Sikorsky and staff provided the group with a terrific meal and a great tour of these historic and picturesque camps. Stopping for a photo in front of the partridge “pole” with owner Igor Sikorsky were, from left, Wendy Bossie, Shirley Cote, Don Morrison, Kathy Morrison, Jane McEwen, Carol Castle, Mavis Churchill and Bob Sprague.
