‘Yes’ on 1
To the editor:
My name is Benjamin Potvin and I am originally from Fort Kent. I currently reside in Saco and teach instrumental music at Kennebunk High School. It seems like only yesterday I was writing a letter to the editor, asking the public to support legalization of gay marriage in Maine. Now three years later, I am writing the same letter to you. My partner and I have been engaged for 2.5 years, so we are particularly invested in this issue.
Question One reads: “Do you want to allow the State of Maine to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples?”
The issue at hand is a question about the marriage license itself, which is a civil document issued by the government. It does not require religious groups to recognize our union. Question 1 would allow my partner and I to enter a marriage contract that would affirm and protect ourselves as a couple and our future children. Our marriage would in no way diminish the loving relationship between a man and a woman.
By voting “yes” on Question 1, my relationship status would be afforded the same respect and civil responsibilities/rights that my friends and family currently enjoy. Please vote “yes” on Question 1.
