It just makes sense!

To the editor:

As the clock winds down to Election Day 2012, I pause to reflect on how politics have influenced the lives of those I love most, my family and friends. Four years ago my husband and son were talking about politics and the buzz surrounding a presidential election year.

A spot was open for the House seat to represent Presque Isle in Augusta — a decision was made. Often times I’ve questioned that decision, but never have I regretted it. My husband’s dedication to the place we grew up is unfaltering and never wavers.

Two years later my son decided to throw his hat into the political arena, and again, the learning process continued. There is one thing I’ve learned from all of this, however, and that is decisions affecting people other than yourself are not always easy, and at times there are those who come away from that decision feeling they’ve been slighted. I have also come to realize the fragility of friendship. Politics, do indeed, put people in funny positions because the passion that seems to come with political views are sometimes overwhelming and the line between politics and friendship sometimes get blurred.

Although saddened by lost friendships, I love that passion, I love that people care deeply about the place where they hope to grow up, raise families and grow old. Both my husband and son carry that same passion with them to Augusta. They represent their towns, always with the best interests of their districts in mind. That is what they do — represent the people of their districts, not their own self-interests. Party line or not, if it doesn’t make sense for the people of the district — it just doesn’t fly with them.

I love the progress that my two “boys” have helped make in our great state. No doubt about it, Maine is in a tough spot, along with other states, we face economic challenges that threaten the lifestyles we treasure. Real leadership has been shown from districts 5 and 7 with the passing of the para-medicine bill (Mike), health insurance reform, (Mike and Alex), giving our retired educators the first cost of living raise in years (Mike and Alex), promoting the health and welfare of our soldiers and veterans (Mike and Alex), and of course every time I get on I-95, I thank my son for making that drive a little faster with the passage of the 75 mph speed limit. All legislation that makes sense for the people of districts 5 and 7 and all of Maine.

I am very proud to support the men in my family and will gladly, and proudly, enter that booth with my head held high and show that support with my vote. Please join me — it just makes sense!
